If all I had to do was my job…

If all I had to do was my job, oh how my life would be simpler.  Quieter too, of course, and less joyful and fulfilling and heart-warming and all of that.  I get that.  I really do.

But today, I am envious of my husband, who kisses me and the boys in the morning and goes off to work, where he gets to…work!  And he works all day, knowing his kids and his home are well taken care of and that supper will be ready (most days) when he arrives home at the end of the day.

Cartoon depiction of mom trying to do many things at onceHe gets to do his job, without worrying about:

How to be in three places at the same time.

How to say no…again…to our son’s having a friend over because I have an appointment later.

How to schedule a breakfast meeting, photo shoot and uploading of an MLS listing around our kids’ activities and sleepover plans.

Whether there’s enough food in the house to get through the next day.

How to find time to walk the dog.

Whether we have clean sheets for tonight’s guest in the spare bedroom and if not, what then!

How to find the quiet, uninterrupted space necessary to study the market for properties fitting my new client’s needs and schedule showings that make sense.

How to keep the kids happy, entertained and nourished while I’m buried in paperwork.

How to schedule a quick one-day trip to the country to visit a friend who is in from California when I’m about to get a new listing.

How to speak with the developer I’m working with without the sounds of cartoons and “Mom, I’m hungry!!!” in the background.

And whether the boys really will turn into violent psychopaths because of the number of hours they’ve spent playing video games yet again!

Don’t get me wrong.  I love all of my various roles: mom, wife, dog owner, home owner, real estate broker, home stager, sister, daughter, friend, etc.  And I would not trade any of it…well, not for any length of time anyway : )

And I have a really and truly supportive husband.  I really, really do.  He’s a partner in every sense of the word.  But even so…

What I find hardest is not the hard work, the scheduling, the organizing, the management and over-seeing of most things home and children related.  What I find hardest is the feeling that I’m not doing anything really well.  I’m doing some things really well, but not all of them.  And yet they’re all important to me.

Ah, the angst of the working mother.

If anyone knows of an antidote to this angst, beyond an evening glass of wine, spill your beans!  Please!

As for me, I’ll begin my research on cloning…

Feeling Fat…But Inspired

I’ve put on 12 pounds in the 3 years I’ve been involved in the world of real estate, first as a Montreal home stager and now as a Montreal real estate agent too.

Worse than the weight, I totally dropped my running and pilates. I used to be in great shape. Now I’m in terrible shape.

So, after months and months of complaining about my weight and condition, last Friday I joined the Montreal West Island YMCA.  I’ve gone to 2 classes so far — one of which hobbled me for 72 hours : )   And Wednesday, I got a gift that was most inspiring of all.

At that morning’s class, right in front of me was my neighbour/friend…with her bright blue scarf covering a bald head. She’s under-going chemotherapy for breast cancer. Her last treatment, she threw up for 24 hours.

And she was at the gym today.

Not making excuses.

Not complaining about the schlepping of gear.

Doing as much of the workout as she could…which was more than me.

Smiling!  Happy to feel well enough to be there.  Helping lead the class. (She will be co-teaching it again soon.)

Inspiring.

She’s one of the bravest women I know.

We should all be so lucky to have someone like her appear in our lives just when we need it.  To inspire us to take care of ourselves.  To stop making excuses.  To schedule in the time we need to take care of these bodies that allow us to do all that we do.

"Tanya, Martha Stewart's An A**hole."

Indulge me in a personal story (once again), will you?

Back in 1998, I went from a high-flying career as a criminologist to being a stay-at-home mom in the span of about a week.  And I stayed at home for the next five years.  During that time, I went through quite a few identity crises.

What does a stay-at-home mom do?

What are my responsibilities?

What sorts of things should I be doing that I didn’t do previously – besides the most important one of raising my baby?

And so I looked to the experts for answers to these questions.  Well, two experts mainly: Martha Stewart and my mother-in-law.  (My own mother worked while raising four of us.  How she did this is beyond me.)

White flag put up in surrenderMartha Stewart irons her sheets – versus washing them and throwing them on her bed immediately because she cannot, for the life of her, figure out hold to fold a blasted fitted sheet.

She also bleaches her laundry naturally on the clothes line — versus throwing out the items that seem beyond repair.

And she bakes macaroni and cheese from scratch– versus boiling macaroni (whole wheat at least), throwing shredded cheese from a bag on it and calling it “Mommy’s macaroni surprise” (their favourite meal to this day).

One day while ironing the sheets and sweating like a cold beer on a hot day, my mother-in-law called and asked what I was doing.  “Ironing my sheets,” I said.  “Why?” she said.  “Because Martha Stewart said so,” I told her.  Then came the magical words

“Tanya, Martha Stewart’s an a**hole.”

And I was released.

Released from doing things just because an “expert” in the field said that it was a good idea, that it was the way things should be done.

Released from blindly following someone who I thought was doing it “right,” when in reality their “right” was never right for me.

And so it is in business and Montreal real estate as well.

We need to find our own way.

To find our own identity in business.

To not blindly follow the people who appear to be leaders just because they appear to be leaders.

To not jump onto every new strategy, tactic, tip, idea, social media website just because they are there, because others do it and because we’ve been told we should.

 Let’s stop.

Let’s think about what we’re doing.

Let’s find the authenticity in everything we do.

Let’s learn from the “experts” but find our own way.

At least that’s what I’m trying to do.  How about you?

Nota bene: Of course Martha Stewart is not an a**hole, but I could never begin to keep up with the things that she suggests are “good things”…unless I only slept 3-4 hours a day and had a staff of 13 at my disposal.  ‘Til that happens…

"Hey, you should blog about this."

A picture is worth a thousand words.

This has nothing to do with Montreal real estate, Montreal home staging, or plans for 2010.

It has everything to do with: 1. Being in Key West last year on vacation with Mr. Man; and 2. Mr. Man finding this picture on the computer the other day and saying, “Hey, you should blog about this.”

Yes, he actually said those words: “You should blog about this.”

What does this mean?

I think it means that he no longer sees my blogging as “the other man” in our relationship! Finally!

Does this mean an end to the glares he sends my way as I type, blog,  comment and laugh out loud while on Active Rain, my fav on-line real estate network, or other parts of cyberspace? One can only hope.

But at least the private detective he hired to tail me should be a thing of the past. I’ll keep you posted…

I got nothing done over the holidays.

Despite the best of intentions, I really got nothing done over the holidays. As a certain someone was thinking of the time he would have off during Christmas and New Year’s as an opportunity to perfect his Guitar Hero performance of all things Van Halen, I was relishing the opportunity to get my Montreal home staging and Montreal real estate business in gear for 2010: to assess how 2009 had played out, input all my expenses, make sure my invoices were all aligned with accounts receivable, lay out my plans for 2010 and the steps involved to get there, etc. You know, all the stuff we business owners really should be doing to prepare for the year ahead.

I got none of that done.

Here’s what I did get done:

Skating with my family and friends on the outdoor rink in the Old Port of Montreal on Christmas day. It was magical.

Laughing with my dear, sweet in-laws, who are going through some terrible health issues and yet have managed to retain their sense of humour.

First Nations Carving in the Great Hall of the Museum of Civilization

Escaping to Ottawa with my husband and two boys for a few days. This involved touring the Museum of Civilization, seeing the IMAX movie Wild Safari (AWESOME!), and driving to the Prime Minister of Canada’s house — we didn’t get invited in : (  Here’s a shot of one of the First Nations’ carvings in the Great Hall of the Museum. It is huge and awe-inspiring.

Seeing old friends in Ottawa, visiting with their kids who are growing up way too fast, and enjoying the company of people who have known us for so long, none of our conversations with them need an update on context. Know what I mean? We can talk about anything, and they know where we’re coming from and why.

Looking through the great pictures we’ve taken over the last year and reminiscing about where we were when we took what shot.

Celebrating New Year’s with our great friends and letting the boys stay up to toast the New Year with us.

Is This Grandpa?

Speaking on the phone with family who live too far away for my liking.

Reading a great book: The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson.

Talking about my business plan for 2010 with my husband, the best business and time management coach anyone could ask for. Here he is with our sons, pointing to a 1970s picture of a crab fisherman at the Museum in Ottawa and asking, based on the hair, “Is that you, Grandpa?”

Snuggling for hours with my boys (all three : ), covering them with kisses, and looking into their eyes and really LISTENING to them.

Yup, I got nothing done over the holidays. And I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I’ve got work to do…
